Ski mountaineering weekend at the Vernagthütte

With state-certified ski guide

The Vernagthütte is closed for renovation in spring 2025. Tours will be possible again from 2026.

Built in 1901 Vernagt Hut lies at 2755 metres in the midst of the fantastic glacier world of the Ötztal Alps. It is located in the rear Rofental valley, in the shadow of the Guslar and Vernagtferner mountains. In the spring, the Vernagt Hut is an attractive base for interesting Ski mountaineering on the Wildspitze, the Fluchtkogel, the Guslarspitze or the Hochvernagtspitze.

Ski Touring Weekend Tyrol with Wildspitze

The starting point for the end of the season in the Ötztal Alps is the Pitztal Glacier Ski Area. From there we start into the Ski Touring Weekend at the Vernagt Hut. We first climb the Wildspitze, at 3770 metres the roof of Tyrol, and then drive over the Brochkogeljoch to the Vernagthütte. On the following two days, depending on the conditions, we have a choice of different summit destinations. Via the Taschachjoch or the Sexenjoch we finally get back to our starting point in the Pitztal with a fantastic downhill run.

High altitude ski tour on the Fluchtkogel, 3500 m

The high-altitude ski tour on the Fluchtkogel is one of the worthwhile undertakings in the Ötztal Alps. From the Vernagthütte we ascend via the Guslarferner to the Oberes Guslarjoch (3361 m). Now we continue northwards over the steep final slope to the summit.

Overnight stay at the Vernagt Hut.

High altitude ski tour to the Hochvernagtspitze, 3530 m

With the Hochvernagtspitze, another great peak is on the day's programme. From the Vernagt hut we follow the extensive Großer Vernagtferner. Over two steep steps we first reach the pre-peak and then over the narrow ridge to the main peak. Now we first descend the steep SE-slope to approx. 3170 m. Then it's time to start again and climb up to the Sexenjoch (3303 m). A fantastic descent follows over the north-facing Sexegertenferner, which usually still has powder snow even in spring. Past the Taschachhaus, which is closed in winter, we follow the Taschach valley to Mittelberg. We thoroughly deserve the final cold drink at the Pitztal ski hut 🙂

Conclusion of the tour in Mittelberg & farewell.

The ski touring weekend at the Vernagt hut is for Ski tourers with solid experience in ski touring. You do not need to have any high altitude touring/glacier experience.

You can ski parallel and solidly in changing snow types and have a decent ascent technique. Pointed turns should not be a problem. You can manage ascents of up to 1,000 metres in altitude and 6 hours a day (with breaks).

Please note that we are travelling in glaciated terrain at over 3,000 metres. You should therefore definitely go on a few preparation tours during the winter. You should also be free from vertigo.
